Looking past the obvious, close observation and engagement of the subject is my process. The challenge is to see beyond the distraction of the conspicuous to capture its unique self. Some of my subjects are quite beautiful, some are less so. My goal is to inspire those who see my work to look more carefully at the world around them, to discover beauty in unusual places. My artwork takes a critical view of social, political, and cultural issues. Often referencing Southeast Asia history, my work explores the varying relationships between popular culture and consciousness in Ancient wisdom

A. Asan is a versatile Visual artist who works with different kinds of techniques, oils, print, acrylics, and watercolors. Her contemporary work is both abstract and figurative and seems at first glimpse to be heavily influenced by neo-expressionism and abstract expressionism, especially American figurative expressionism work and drawings. But further acquaintance with Asan’s unique biography and the sources/inspirations behind her oeuvre reveal an artist who has deftly marshaled passion, intellectual rigor, and solid technique to create a genuinely original body of work.
